Furnace Troubleshooting: What to Do Before Calling for Furnace Repair

October 07, 2015

You can’t depend on the weather in Oxford, but one thing the team at Franklin's Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc wants you to be able to trust in is your heating and cooling system. Having a comfortable home isn’t a seasonal thing, it’s something you need all year. When your furnace is having problems you may think that means a furnace repair can be expected in your future. That may not be the case. If your furnace hasn’t been its usual, stable self recently, there are some things a homeowner can do before calling in the experts at Franklin's Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.

Check the Thermostat

We have received calls where all we had to do was switch a thermostat from “cool” to “heat”. While setting the thermostat for the season, it’s easy for a homeowner to forget to flip the switch, telling your heating and cooling system what you want it to do.

Something else to check while you’re at the thermostat is the battery. Almost all digital thermostats are equipped with a low battery warning, but if some time has passed since you’ve changed batteries it may be time for a switch. It’s another painless fix that could save you a repair call.

Check the Filter

A dirty air filter can create all sorts of problems. Not only will a dirty filter cripple your system’s efficiency and block air flow, it could also cause an abrupt breakdown. Changing the filter in your heating and cooling system is easy and it can play a huge role in keeping your system functioning at its best.

Check the Switches

The first switch you’ll want to investigate is the breaker for your furnace. Sometimes a problem can be as minor as a tripped breaker or blown fuse.

Check the Vents

A frequent misconception is that a homeowner should shut the vents in unused rooms. This could actually lead to a furnace repair down the road. Closed vents cause higher pressure throughout your duct system and cause your system to work harder than it needs to.

If you’ve tried our troubleshooting tips and you’re still having problems the team at Franklin's Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc are always there for you to make sure all of your home comfort needs are met. Give us a call at 662-281-1231.
