The Next Generation of Cooling Refrigerants. A refrigerant is a liquid that is stored in your AC coils, which help cool and dehumidify the indoor air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. Over the years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce due to its negative effects on the environment. Introducing R-410A To reduce environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now engineered to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and doesn’t contain chlorine, so it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel at ease using this refrigerant in Oxford because it’ll help make your system perform efficiently, reliably and quietly, and offer the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made anytime before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You may want to think about upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately out of production. The old refrigerant will become scarce in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Franklin's Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. work with R-410A, so you can rest assured we have an AC or heat pump you can better rely on. Be sure to avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
